The SAMMs Team Marking Well in Hull!

The SAMMs Team with local Brethren in Hull

On Wednesday 26th June, the team was invited by St Andrews Mark Lodge No. 1130, who meet in the large and fine Masonic temple in Hull, to share in the special occasion celebrating their 75th Anniversary, and to perform a demonstration ceremony, a round trip of over 550 miles!

Being warmly welcomed by the Worshipful Master W.Bro Martin Rowland, over 80 brethren  attended this meeting, including our SAMMS team, with the Provincial Mark team of North and East Yorkshire, lead by RW Bro David Clancey, the Provincial Grand Master.

To cut a long story short… the SAMMS team entered into lodge in full costume, which had not seen beforehand by the Hull brethren, after they had conducted most of their business and then the reenactment began.

The Worshipful Sir (aka Ian Strickland) instructs the “Candidate”

The ceremony was conducted in a wonderful style, creating the magical atmosphere of long ago, with a combination of well presented ritual, mirth and a thespian style of acting. The Worshipful Sir ( WM) , W.Bro Ian Strickland  and V.W. Bro Peter Roworth as JD leading the candidate around, both excelling in their pivotal roles aided by the rest of the officers, some of them a bit ‘ tipsy’ ………blame the Inn Keeper
for that. The members also have the privilege of drinking Cider or Ales in the lodge,  which would of been very likely at the time ( over 200 years ago ).

The demonstration was very warmly received with rapturous applause from the brethren !

The SAMMS team, along with the rest of the brethren,  then retired , to a cracking festive board.

The team enjoy a super festive board following the demonstration

To add to the ambiance, the team dined in full costume, plenty of sweating and rehydration,  as it was a very warm night in North East Yorkshire!!

There followed the customary collection and raffle, at which the brethren of St Andrew Mark lodge and from the Mark Province of North and East Yorkshire,  gave a very generous donation to SAMMS,  which will go to the 2028 Mark festival, in Somerset.

A special note of thanks must go to the Secretary of St Andrew Mark lodge,  W.Bro Brian Gent, for all his hard work to make this a well run and coordinated day for all involved and also to W.Bro Mike Fazakerley,  the Secretary of SAMMS,  who put in his fair share of emails and phone calls and last but not least, to V.W Bro Peter Roworth, for driving the mini bus and getting the team there and back safely….!

Thanks to all, for making it a truly memorable evening and excursion.

‘ Here’s to our next merry meeting’!
